Our Work

The Akshaya Patra work in Odisha began in June 2006 with the establishment of the Puri centralised kitchen. Soon after, realising the need to provide food in the remote areas of the state, Akshaya Patra established its decentralised kitchen in Nayagarh in 2007. The Foundation chose to establish a decentralised kitchen in Nayagarh instead of a highly mechanised centralised kitchen to overcome issues of infrastructure and road connectivity in the remote region. In 2013 Akshaya Patra opened its centralised kitchen in Rourkela, and a year later opened another centralised kitchen in Cuttack. Together these kitchens provide food to 125,242 children across 1,461 schools every day.
With the kitchens in Odisha, Akshaya Patra reaches out to over 1.4 million children in 10,770 schools across India every day. Through the kitchens established across 24 locations in the country, the Foundation works hard daily to realise its vision that 'No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger'.
Akshaya Patra has been able to make the progress it has since its inception in 2000, feeding just 1,500 children across 5 schools, because of the constant support of the Central and State Governments, philanthropy from the corporate sector and support of individual donors. Akshaya Patra understands that this unfailing support has been given due to the level of trust that the Foundation has established with its stakeholders through its extremely transparent financial and operations processes. With this support and the will to eliminate classroom hunger in India, Akshaya Patra works towards achieving its mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020.
